Cycling For Hepatitis C

Wednesday 12 October, 2011

We were more than pleased to lend sponsorship support to one of our customers, the Jehu Group, who organised a charity bike ride, which involved 22 of their employees - including their Buyer Gemma Bennett who we understand hadn’t even been on a bicycle for about 13 years - cycling the Taff Trail, 55 miles from Brecon to Cardiff.

The sponsored ride took place on Friday October 7th 2011 and took about 7 hours. No mean feat!!

The event took place to help raise funds for a charity very close to the heart of their Purchasing Manager, Mr David Thomas, namely The Hepatitis C Trust.

Hepatitis C is a blood borne virus that can and does cause fatal liver disease and for which there is no vaccine but there is treatment. There are 250,000 to 500,000 people in the UK living with the virus of whom considerably more than half are undiagnosed and at risk of developing fatal liver disease.

Symptoms can go unnoticed or misdiagnosed for many years, and sometimes diagnosis can come too late. For these reasons hepatitis C is often referred to as the ‘Silent Epidemic’. Awareness and testing are crucial to saving lives. The Hepatitis C Trust is the only national UK charity for hepatitis C. It is a mainly patient run organisation whose mission is to reverse the rapidly rising death toll caused by hepatitis C until no one dies from this preventable and treatable disease.
To achieve this they provide a wide range of services that include:

· Raising awareness and correcting misconceptions and stigma of the disease that prevents people at risk from being tested. World Hepatitis Day, now officially recognised by the World Health Organisation, is a Trust initiative.

· Providing mobile testing all over the UK attempting to reach areas where diagnosis is low.

· Running a helpline and providing representation and advocacy for anyone affected by hepatitis C.

· The Hepatitis C Trust is the secretariat for the All Party Parliamentary Group and continues to lobby Parliament for a more robust response to hepatitis C.

Congratulations to all who took part, for taking the time and expending no doubt a great deal of personal effort and leg muscle, to help raise these much needed funds.
